New Wines

I tasted a lot of wines. Over several months.

I spent a lot of time on wine review Web sites.

Then I tasted many many more wines.

It was a tough job, but someone had to do it!

Finally, I was able to select a few new wines to add to our wine list.

Wines that have fantastic flavor. That represent their respective wine regions very well. And just as importantly, wines that offered good value for the price.

I am confident that all my selection efforts will be enjoyed for a long time by our customers.

So…..

First, I wanted a nice, refreshing white that would both complement our food as well as be a nice wine to sip on a warm summer day on our patio.

The choice –

Anne Amie Pinot Gris 2008
This Willamette Valley Pinot gris is an elegant expression of this versatile varietal. Intensely aromatic powdery floral notes give way to a palate of Asian pear, Meyer lemon and rose petal. A balanced and crisp white wine.

The Wine Advocate and Robert Parker give this wine a very high score of 89.

Of the dozens of Pinot Grigios and Pinot Gris’ I tried, some much more expensive, some less, this wine really stood out for the great floral aromas I enjoyed, as well as the nicely balanced acidity that I think will allow it to pair very will with a wide range of our menu offerings.

Next, I was looking for a Rhone Valley blend to replace some wines that we had dropped from our wine list.

The Rhone Valley is big, complex, with many different styles and blends of grapes reflected from the northern regions to the south.

I wanted something with some body and lushness to it, which steered me north to where the Grenache grape predominates over the Syrah.

The choice here:

2007 Selection Laurence Feraud Cotes du Rhone Villages Seguret
A blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah, the outstanding 2007 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Seguret is a brilliant wine as well as a fabulous bargain. Aromas of licorice, lavender, cassis, and kirsch emerge from this dense ruby/purple-hued offering. Full-bodied and pure with the sweet tannins that make this vintage so impressive.

Robert Parker rated this wine 90+, with the ‘+’ indicating an expected upside as the wine spends some time in the bottle, which it now has. So this is clearly something very special.

This wine really captivated me. Lush. Full. This is the reason that I drink wine. I can get lost in a wine like this, just enjoying the complex flavors and aromas as they wash over me.

Finally, a Malbec.

Although we have one very nice Malbec and one spectacular Malbec on the list now, this grape is the most popular we offer. So I wanted to fill out the category just a bit. And why not take the opportunity to taste a whole bunch more Malbecs

The selection here:

2007 Familia Zuccardi Malbec Q
This Malbec has a purple-black color and is bursting with blackcurrant and damson plum aromas. It’s full-bodied with plenty of black cherry and chocolate notes and a slightly peppery, velvety finish. It has a sensuously full mouth feel, with a silky and lingering finish.

Robert Parker and the Wine Advocate rated this wine a 90.

Lots of dark fruit in this wonderfully full and silky wine, with just a touch of pepper at the end. I loved it!

Three new offerings on our wine list. Each wonderful in it’s own right.

So come on over and give these a try. I’m sure you will enjoy them as much as I did!
