Carnival

In most of the world, it’s Carnival.

In ‘Nawlins’ it is of course Mardi Gras.

Fat Tuesday.

Time to fatten up before the Lenten period of self-denial.

That means Crawfish Etouffee and Crawfish Beignets here at Sol Del Sur.

The parades and beads in New Orleans were fun. Bourbon Street is of course out of control.

And I am sure the Carnival in Rio is the best, but I never had a chance to visit Rio de Janeiro during the Carnival season. Its high on my list though!

Munich, Germany however, seems to have organized the fasting time to their great advantage.

After receiving permission to classify beer as food instead of alcohol – from the Pope himself – the party was on in Bavaria.

Not only do they brew and drink their fill of Beer during the time usually reserved for fasting and denial, they invented a special beer – Strong Beer (Starkbier) – to drink during the long and dreary Lenten days and nights.  Because one needs more sustenance during the times of fasting and denial to keep up ones strength.

When we enjoyed the numerous Starkbierfests – Strong Beer Festivals – in Munich, the biggest problem they had was what to do with all the thousands of eyeglasses that fell off the noses of all the passed out patrons onto the tables and floors.

I mean, look at those beers they’re drinking – a quart of strong beer (1 liter) per glass! No wonder heads eventually hit the table and glasses take a bounce!

Like some sort of optical hail storm.

The waitstaff tried diligently to place as many eyeglasses back on the slumbering noses as they could, but inevitably most never found their rightful owner and were consigned to the lost and found, to be later donated to charity.

They party EVERY night in Munich during the Carnival season. Which directly precedes the Strong Beer Week of course. Many cities around the world – notably Köln, Venice in Italy, Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and New Orleans in the US –  party right along with them with lots of food, music, parades, drinks, dancing all night and general debauchery.

But the Starkbierfest is the winner for sheer drunken bliss.

Celebrating Carnival and Mardi Gras – we will fatten up on some Crawfish Etouffee and Crawfish Beignets.

This week only.

Happy Mardi Gras!
