Orange

The first time I visited Amsterdam I knew I liked that place.

Yes, the canals are cool.  And the coffee shops are really not about the coffee.  And the bikes and red lights and all that are nice too.

But the national color is Orange.  That really caught my eye.

Sort of unconsciously I have been immersing myself in shades of orange ever since.

So despite the rainy, cold, blustery weather, this time of year is special.  Its high season for oranges.

Seville oranges, famous for their unique flavor, are available for just the month of January.

Blood oranges, with their fiery interior, are here and gone before the spring.

Valencias, Cara Caras, all the wonderful varieties at their peak of orangeness right now.

So we have caramelized oranges on the Coca.  And lamb shanks braised in blood oranges.  And the fig marmalade has lots of oranges in it.  And a blood orange salad is on the menu as well.

Everywhere oranges!

But just for a month or so.

Then it’s back to the other colors for the long haul of spring, summer and autumn, until it’s orange season once again!
