Chillin’ on a Chilean Evening

Pounding rain, wind, cold – talk about chillin’!  I was surprised anyone came out in such bad weather!

But nothing was goin’ to stop us from having fun on our Chilean Wine Tasting Evening!  And a great crowd braved the weather to join us.

So thanks to everyone who joined us for what turned out to be some really fun flavors, and some great wines!

On the food side, the South American Chilean flair really kept the cold weather at bay.

I think the Humitas en Chala – or Chilean Corn Tamales – were a hit.  Fresh corn with just a touch of a very floral Chilean chili pepper were a nice combination.

Also the empanadas were very well received, which I was pretty happy about as they were a lot more work to make than I anticipated.  But toasty, crispy, a just a little sweet from the raisins in the filling seemed to hit the spot!

I personally thought the Tuna and Citrus Ceviche was awesome.  The ancho chili salt complemented the orange and tangerine flavored ceviche nicely.  It was a more subtly flavored marinade for the tuna than is typical, but very refined and balanced.

The grape fritters were both fun to make and to eat, as the crisp fritter shell sort of popped with lightly roasted grape goodness.

And pretty much everyone likes Dolche du Leche.  So the chocolate macaroons I made, and then filled with Dolche de Leche were sure to be a hit.  And they were.

On the wine side, the Chardonnay and the Syrah were the two clear winners.  Everyone seemed to like the pairings of the wines to the food.  But the Chardonnay and the Syrah elicited the most ohhs and ahs.  Always a good sign!
