Wines we are Pouring for our Italian Wine Tasting Dinnner on 11/14/09

Here are the descriptions of the wines are are pouring next Saturday.  All are highly acclaimed, well crafted wines that represent some of the best of modern Italian wine makers today.

I think that they will pair wonderfully with the menu we have prepared.

Casalnova Prosecco
Producer: Casalnova
Region: Conegliano (just north of Venice)
Country: Italy
Grape Variety: 100% Prosecco
Alcohol: 11%

Description: The color is a pale straw yellow with green reflections, lively sparkle, fine and long lasting perlage. The bouquet is subtle and refined with hints of honeysuckle and acacia flowers.

 

La Tunella Rjgialla 2006

Region: Colli Orientali Del Friuli (just north of Trieste)
Grape Variety: 100% Ribolla Gialla
Alcohol Strength: 13.0% by volume

Description: La Tunella Rjgialla 2006 features a crystalline strawyellow color, with green reflections. The nose spans across notes of acacia, plum, yellow peach and green apple. The palate is intense and full with a supple body, echoing the wine’s varietal character, while also dry and pleasantly fresh. The long finish develops pleasing notes of lemon that accompany an elegant and slightly aromatic aftertaste.

Description: La Tunella Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso 2005 shows intense ruby red color, with violet reflections that develop into garnet tones with ageing. A distinctly vinous bouquet –broad, rich and intense — anchored by fruity and spiced notes of underbrush, wild blackberry, raspberry, cocoa and tobacco. It has a full, dry body with substantial structure and a slightly bitter aftertaste. Subtle vanilla aromas intermingle pleasingly with the ensemble of sensations on the palate and nose.

 

Paternoster Synthesi 2005
Producer: Azienda Vincola Paternoster
Country: Italy
Region: Barile, Aglianico del Vulture (far south, just east of Naples)
Grape Variety: 100% Aglianico
Alcohol Strength: 13.0% by volume

Description: Synthesi has a lively, deep ruby red color, with light orange highlights. The nose features a delicately fruity bouquet of prunes and blackberries and aromatic hints of Mediterranean herbs and tobacco leaf – all presented in a nicely woven structure of ashy tannins, so typical of the area. The palate is full-bodied, showing a well-balanced elegant and velvety structure as the wine ages.

 

La Tunella Verduzzo 2006 Dessert Wine

Region: Colli Orientali Del Friuli (near Trieste)
Grape Variety: 100% Verduzzo Friulano
Alcohol: 12.5%

Description: La Tunella Verduzzo Friulano 2006 has a clear and luminous, intense golden yellow color. It features a vinous and distinctive bouquet with defined honeyed and vanilla notes from the oak ageing. The palate is sweet, corpulent and robust with a slight tannin component, typical of the variety, supported and closed by an amalgam of mixed tastes and flavors from the barrique.
