Mendoza is the main wine producing province in Argentina and, as of July 2005, one of the eight Great Wine Capitals of the world.

The vineyard acreage in Mendoza alone is about half of the entire acreage in the United States and more than the combined acreage of New Zealand and Australia. Most plantings are now premium red varietals which beyond Malbec include Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo and various Italian varieties.

Clearly Argentina has great wines!

The classic beginner’s mistake in Argentina is to neglect the first steak of the day (!?) That first steak has to get you through the afternoon and half the night, until the restaurants begin to open at ten for the midnight second dose of beef at an Asado or Parrilla.

And the fare? Eggplant. Short ribs. Whole Chicken. Organ Meats. Steak that’s two inches thick. Chorizo sausage. Thick slices of Provolone cheese, grilled until just soft enough to spread across pieces of crusty bread. If you’re in Argentina and in luck, you’ll get the whole animal.

AND Argentina has great beef!

So join us for a special tasting of wines of the Mendoza region of Argentina paired with unique tastes of their cuisine!

The Wines

New Age White
Producer: Valentin Bianchi
Region: San Rafael, Mendoza
Country: Argentina
Grape Variety: 50% Malvasia 50% Sauvignon Blanc
Alcohol: 9.5% by volume

Description:
A vivacious and sensual wine, exhibiting aromas of fresh flowers and fruit, crisp, yet soft in the finish.

Winemaker Notes:
The fruit is hand picked followed by crushing, cooling of crushed grapes, and pressing. Fermentation begins by inoculating with selected yeasts. Halfway through the fermentation process, the wine is centrifuged (spun) to halt fermentation, creating a slightly sweet, semi-sparkling wine.

Elsa Chardonnay 2007
Producer: Valentin Bianchi S.A.
Country: Argentina
Region: San Rafael, Mendoza
Grape Variety: 90% Chardonnay, 10% Semillon
Alcohol Strength: 14.3% by volume

Description:
There are bright, medium-intense aromas of honeyed lemon, peaches and tropical fruit, making this wine immediately attractive. A soft entry and enjoyable crispness combine for enjoyment as both an aperitif and the perfect accompaniment to lighter dishes.

Winemaker’s Notes:
Valentin Bianchi’s Chardonnay and Semillon grapes come from the Estate’s Dona Elsa Vineyards, which is situated in Rama Caida, San Rafael, Mendoza, at around 760 meters above sea level. This is one of the coolest areas in San Rafael. Hand-picked and twice sorted by hand, the Chardonnay grapes are crushed and fermented over ten days at controlled temperatures of 15 degrees Celsius in stainless steel tanks with medium-toasted French oak innerstaves. After blending with the Semillon, the wine goes through one month’s aging in the bottle.

Don Valentin Bianchi Lacrado 2005
Producer: Valentin Bianchi S.A.
Country: Argentina
Region: San Rafael, Mendoza
Grape Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, & Merlot
Alcohol Strength: 13.1% by volume

Description:
The most popular traditional Argentine wine in the Valentin Bianchi portfolio, Bianchi Lacrado is a wine of intense ruby red color, with robust intensity and a great, perfume-like nose. The palate is velvety smooth, with a complex array of flavors. It has a medium-long, satisfying finish.

Winemaker’s Notes:
The grapes come primarily from Valentin Bianchi’s Finca Asti Estate, Doña Elsa Estate, and the Las Parades Estate, situated in Rama Caíida, San Rafael, Mendoza, between 730 to 760 meters above sea level. One of the coolest areas in San Raphael, the soil in Rama Caída is of sandy calcareous composition and alluvial origins. Picked by hand, the grapes go through classical crushing and fermenting, with periodic pump over
and maceration on skin for three weeks. The wine is aged in stainless steel tanks, filtered and bottled.

Particular Malbec 2004
Producer: Valentin Bianchi S.A.
Country: Argentina
Region: San Rafael, Mendoza
Grape Variety: 95% Malbec, 5% Syrah
Alcohol Strength: 14.8% by volume

Description:
The characteristic silkiness of Malbec is outstanding in this wine, which exhibits great concentration, an intense violet red color, and a complex nose which is a combination of red fruits, violets, tobacco, vanilla spices and smokiness. The rich, gripping mouthfeel, followed by a soft, silky texture, is typical of Argentine Malbec and what sets it apart from all other grapes. The taste follows through from the nose to a lingering finish, inviting one to return for more.

Winemaker’s Notes:
The grapes come from the Doña Elsa Estate, situated in Rama Caíida, San Rafael, Mendoza, around 760 meters above sea level. The grapes were hand-harvested in small 30 to 40 pound picking lugs. Before destemming, all unripe or compromised fruit and leaves were manually eliminated. Afterwards, the fruit drops onto a second conveyor belt, where any other pieces of stems and berries not fully colored were removed by hand. Once in fermenting tanks, most of the grapes were cold macerated for a few days, followed by fermentation, where temperature, time and frequency of pump-over were constantly monitored. Total time on skins was 20 days. The wine was aged 14 months in 100-percent new oak, 80-percent French and 20-percent American barrels. After stabilization, filtering and bottling, the final wine was bottle-aged an additional six months.

Famiglia Bianchi Cabernet Sauvignon 2006
Producer: Valentin Bianchi S.A.
Country: Argentina
Region: San Rafael, Mendoza
Grape Variety: 90% Cab Sauv, 4% Cab Franc, 4%Petite Verdot, 2% Merlot
Alcohol Strength: 14.8% by volume

Description:
A classic Cabernet Sauvignon that can compete with the best from around the world, this wine has an intense red/purple color and an enjoyable, complex nose that is reminiscent of berries, spice, cedar, chocolate and much more. The nose carries through to the palate, delivering rich, full texture and berry-spicy-cedar flavors. It is a well-balanced wine with a lingering, pleasing finish.

Winemaker’s Notes:
The grapes come primarily from the Asti and Doña Elsa Estate, situated in Rama Caíida, San Rafael, Mendoza, around 760 meters above sea level. It is an ideal climate for the Cabernet Sauvignon grape because of the warm days and cool nights that are typical of the area. The soil is of sandy calcareous composition and alluvial origins. Picked by hand, the grapes went through classical crushing and fermentation, with periodic pump-over and maceration on skins for three weeks. It was aged 10 months in 90 percent French, 10 percent American barrels – 33 percent new, 33 percent one year-old and 33 percent two year-old. After stabilization, filtering and bottling, the final wine was bottle-aged an additional five months.
